They say that familiarity breeds contempt, right?
I’m not so sure.
The thing about the familiar is just that: a known quantity. It’s comforting.
Take this weekend, for example. The girlies and I hit the movies on Saturday night. We caught a romantic comedy starring anonymous, tanorexic young starlet whose Agent Orange-tinged skin does nothing to deter the love of the bumbling pet-lover who moves into the apartment next door.
Obviously, she’s allergic to dogs; obviously, they end up together, anyway.
Such is the nature of romantic comedies. And I’m not complaining.
After the movie, we parked ourselves at “our” booth over at Hercules Diner, where we ordered our respective usuals: one order of French toast; one corn muffin, toasted, with grape jelly on the side (very key); one cup of decaf coffee, black. Oh, and some cheese fries to split three ways, of course. The waitress didn’t even have to write our order down. That’s the beauty of the “usual.” If it’s usual enough, it eventually develops its own momentum.
Plainsboro, Illinois, may be a quiet place to grow up, and most of us have known our neighbors since birth. But is that such a bad thing? I say no.
I know we’re always being encouraged to pursue the extraordinary, but I think it might just be a matter of adjusting our mindsets. Maybe it’s not “ordinary,” but the status quo. In a good way. You know-the party line.
After all, who doesn’t love a good party?

A2Z: So right, girl! And we three do know how 2 par-tay…
Brightbabe: it’s the truth, speaking of which, can I borrow ur party-tastic pink sequined headband 4 the shoot this week?
Sby16: it’s at my house. I’ll dig it up.
A2Z: erm, it’s possible that I wore it to the football game last week and maybe it slipped off and disappeared. Maybe. But maybe it’s still there. I mean, I know! It’s there. I’ll find it. 4 sher, Shelby.
Brightbabe: seriously, girlz. Pink sequins are rad, but maybe not worth getting so worked up about? Just a suggestion (heresy, I know). I’m sure we can come up with a plan B. see u both tomorrow! XX
